Venice at Sunset

Venice at Sunset

One of my favorite images from our July trip to Europe is this sunset takenĀ from the Ponte delle Guglie over the Canale di Cannaregio in Venice.

This location was a short walk from the Hotel Bellini, where we were staying. TheĀ Cannaregio CanalĀ isĀ one of the more interesting canals in Venice. The Ponte delle Guglie bridgeĀ where I stood to take the photo was originally built in 1285 and thankfully restored several times since then, the latest in 1987. As you exit the north side of the bridge, you can turn west and approach the Venetian Ghetto.

TheĀ Cannaregio Canal was a very important route of transportation before the railroad station was built nearby (not far from our hotel and exiting right on the Grand Canal). The area was restricted to the thriving Jewish community of merchants from 1516 to 1797 (when Napoleon conquered Venice).
