Black-eyed Susan Close-up

Close-up of Blackeyed Susan

The Black-eyed Susan, (Rudbeckia hirta), is one of the most common wildflowers in the US. The plants often grow up to 3 ft tall with leaves up to 6 in long. This photo was taken on a Thacher Nature Center trail.

These plants are biennial, living only two years. They flower in mid summer to mid October.

Insects like butterflies and bees feed on the nectar of the flowers while deer and rabbits eat the entire plant.

In the close-up of the  flower, you can see the bristly hairs that cover the plant’s stem and the disk flowers that form the brown central cone.

Wildflowers at Thacher Nature Center

On our day at Thacher State Park, we visited the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center. There are a number of trails there with some wildflowers.

This image of a New England Aster, Symphyotrichum novae-anglia, was captured with backlighting and a view upward to give it a dramatic flare.

The NE Aster is a hardy perennial native to this area; blooms August to October and attracts bees and butterflies (although neither where there at the moment I was).

Black & White Views of the Escarpment

Indian Ladder Trail BW#1

Indian Ladder BW #2

Here are two more images from the Indian Ladder Trail escarpment. Both images were made at slightly different perspectives.

The second image shows more of the vertical elevation of the limestone rocks, while the first image shows the sweep of the face of the escarpment.

The first photograph has two people near the entrance to the Tory Cave giving scale to the image. Click on the photos to see much larger views.

Black and white conversion was accomplished in LR3.

Indian Ladder Trail Panorama

Heldeburg Escarpment and Tory Cave

We explored John Boyd Thacher State Park the day before yesterday. The Park provides a spectacular view of the Heldeberg Escarpment and looks into the Hudson-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondack and Green Mountains.

I hiked the Indian Ladder Trail down to the bottom. The trail dates back to about 1570 when the trail was used by the Mohawk Iroquois Indians. Although the trail is only one half mile long, it descends about 60 ft and passes under Minelot Falls. At this time of year, the falls is but a shower – in the early spring it no doubt rushes down. There is a cave (called Tory Cave) carved out under the escarpment which is largely made of limestone. It is said that one Jacob Salsbury hid here in 1777 during the Burgoyne Invasion.

The image here is a panorama of the bottom of the escarpment. You can judge the size of this feature of Indian Ladder Trail by looking at the person standing at the entrance to Tory Cave! I used 11 separate photographs to create this panorama. The original file is 1.2 GB (yes, this is gigabytes) in size. The image was taken with the Tamron 17-55mm lens set at 17mm and the individual photos were stitched together in Photoshop.

Top of the Stretch

Top of the Stretch

This image was made at the top of the stretch at Saratoga Race Course. I positioned myself so I could get the entire field rounding the final turn as they came barreling down toward the finish.

The image was taken with the Canon 300L f4 lens, hand held. It was post-processed in LR 3 with a little zip in details from Topaz Adjust 4,

Stones and Leaf

Stones and Leaf

Just after watering the lawn, I discovered an interesting grouping of stones and a leaf in my landscaping in the front of my house.

Never without thinking about a good image, I created this image using modifications made in LR3. The photograph was first properly “developed” in Lightroom then brought into Topaz Adjust 4 for a bit of a boost in details.

Then back to LR to convert the image to black and white plus painting back the leaf in color. What do you think? Should I put it up for sale on RedBubble?

Photo Store

I have added a number of images to my RedBubble Photo Store. I am still experimenting with this way of selling my photographs. So far, in the few hours since uploading pictures, I have received quit a few views of my images and several nice comments from members of the RedBubble community.

I have added a section in the right column that displays featured images for purchase. Just click and you will see how to order.

There are two ways to get to my store:

The first URL goes to my new “bubble” web site. From there you can select images and see what they look like printed and framed.

The second URL goes directly to the RedBubble account where you can (more easily, I think) navigate and hopefully, purchase my images.

Try them both and let me know what you think by commenting to this post.
