Butterfly World

The Paper Kite

The Paper Kite

A group of us went to Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, Florida (Tradewinds Park). I borrowed a Canon 40D because mine was in the shop being repaired. But I used my own trusty 300 f/4 L because of its sharp, close-focusing ability and the great image stabilization. It also has wonderful bokeh as you can see in this photo.

The photo here is of the Paper Kite (Idea leuconoe), a butterfly commonly found in Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo. These are a very attractive species and are often cultivated and are perfect for Butterfly World.  Idea leuconoe is also known as the Rice Paper or Three Nymph. They look like tasty treats for birds but apparently all of the Idea genus are poisonous to the flying creatures.

You can see the others in this collection by clicking on the link above for my gallery. There is a slide show with a selection. I used natural light which was generally nice and soft early in the day but got distinctly more contrasty later on. All the photos were brought into Lightroom 5 where they were gently processed.

I recently found a website about photographing butterflies this has some decent tips.

Memorial Day Parade 2013

Tuba Player

Went to the Bethlehem Memorial Day Parade. Same bands, same marchers, same nice sunny day and candy thrown from the marchers to the watching kids. A great day!

Mother, Daughter and Son

_MG_7114-Edit-Edit-6Normally, I do not post photos of family but I will make this exception for an informal and natural-light portrait of my daughter, Nicole with her daughter, Lily and her son, Dylan on the day of his birth.

Taken with the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens and post-processed in Lightroom 4 and Nik Color Efex 4. Click to get an bigger version.

Crab Apple Tree

apple blosom landscapeWhat is more representative of spring than a crab apple (Malus species) tree in full bloom? This one is framed by a wonderful stone fence. We have a similar tree in our back yard that has been with us for four decades. There are many varieties and require bees and other similar insects to pollinate.

This photo was taken with the Canon 70-200 L f/4 lens and post-processed in Lightroom 4 with a touch of Nik Color Efex 4. Click on the image to get a much larger one.

Barn and Forsythia

barn and forsythiaThis barn bordered by yellow forsythia was taken at Muscoot Farm in Somers, NY. You can refer to a previous post to read about this farm and photos made last year. The image was taken with the Canon 70-200 L f/4 lens and post-processed in Lightroom 4 and Nik Color Efex 4. Click on the image to see a much larger (and better) version of the photo.

Wakoda Fun

Green Heron

Green Heron

This morning I went to Wakodahatchee Wetlands with about 14 others from our couples group. They went for a walk and I tried to get a few photos in.

I did find a nice green heron snuggled at the edge of the rushes and a good-looking tri-color heron. Both images were taken with the Canon 300 L f4 and post-processed in Lightroom 4.

Delray Beach as Travel Location

Pineapple Grove Street Art

Pineapple Grove Street Art

On Wednesday, I led about 14 photographers on a photo shoot to Delray Beach, Florida. The purpose of the shoot was to help these beginner to intermediate photographers practice skills related to travel photography. The week before I had given them a workshop in which I described my top 10 tips for travel photography.

The picturesque part of the city of Delray Beach’s main drag stretches from Old School Square to the ocean along Atlantic Avenue. Along the way, there are quaint shops, restaurants, the almost famous Colony Hotel and the drawbridge over the Intercostal Waterway.

Lake Worth Pier at Sunrise

Lake Worth Pier

Very early this morning, my friend and I made our way to Lake Worth Pier to photograph the sunrise. Unfortunately, a rather dense cloud cover obscured the sun most of the time and I was not able to get a “traditional” sunset photo with the pier in the foreground from the beach as I had planned.

I went up on to the pier itself and had to pay $1 for the privilege to mingle with the fishermen. This photo was the keeper of the morning. Post-processed in Nik Color Efex 4 using the detail extractor and neutral density filters. I like the nice dramatic sky. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Venice at Sunset

Venice at Sunset

One of my favorite images from our July trip to Europe is this sunset taken from the Ponte delle Guglie over the Canale di Cannaregio in Venice.

This location was a short walk from the Hotel Bellini, where we were staying. The Cannaregio Canal is one of the more interesting canals in Venice. The Ponte delle Guglie bridge where I stood to take the photo was originally built in 1285 and thankfully restored several times since then, the latest in 1987. As you exit the north side of the bridge, you can turn west and approach the Venetian Ghetto.

The Cannaregio Canal was a very important route of transportation before the railroad station was built nearby (not far from our hotel and exiting right on the Grand Canal). The area was restricted to the thriving Jewish community of merchants from 1516 to 1797 (when Napoleon conquered Venice).
