ACEO Magnets

ACEO Magnet

We now have our first ACEO product available to order. ACEO stands for “Art Cards, Editions and Originals”. ACEOs, also known as Artists Trading Cards, are 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches – the size of a trading card or a “wallet-sized” photo. They are very popular ways of collecting art at inexpensive prices.

While most ACEO are actual cards (those are coming, too), we have been able to produce a very interesting variation: all of our photo gallery images are now available in the ACEO size as a magnet! Each professionally produced magnet has rounded edges with our images reproduced in high gloss with a magnetic back.

A note: all images are copyright and all rights are reserved. So purchase of a magnet does not imply any additional rights and no reproduction of the image is permitted.

Price: each magnet with your choice of one image is priced at $15.50 including postage to anywhere in the US. Check the Photo Galleries for images. I do not have a storefront yet (that is also coming soon), so click on the Contact Me link – indicate your interest and we will make arrangements for the transaction.

Our ACEO magnets are great for collecting or to give as gifts.

Traffic Nightscapes

Traffic Nightscape

Atop the Brooklyn Bridge at night, I made these images by setting the shutter to be open for a relatively long time. (Tamron 17-50 at 35mm, f11, 20 sec).

The long exposure produced the effect of streaming lights of the cars on the bridge highway below me.

Color Nightscape

The first image was converted to black and white in Lightroom 3. The second image in color is actually the same photo as the first. But this one I enhanced with Topaz Adjust 4 to create a HDR-like image.

Each photo was cropped differently so the perspective appears to be different.

Under the Brooklyn Bridge

Under the BB

This image was taken at the steps leading up to the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side.

I watched as another photographer in our group waited for people to pass leaving the stairway empty before taking a picture. However, the scene begged for a point of focus. When I saw this young couple ascend, I clicked the shutter as they were under the street lamp. The couple under the light of the lamp makes this great photo and the steps lead the viewer to the focus of the image.

The original was fine, but the final image was converted to black and white in Topaz Adjust 4 to enhance the mood of the space. Hand-held – f2.8 and 1/20 sec  at 21 mm.

NYC Skyline Panorama

Panorama

This image was taken last Wednesday evening on my trip to the Bronx Zoo and the Brooklyn Bridge. The view is from a park just south of the Brooklyn Bridge overlooking the East River looking toward Manhattan. The Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge ends near Canal Street.

The panorama is made up of 7 separate photographs. Each image was captured after the camera was moved slightly from south to north carefully overlapping a portion of each photo. I used the Tamron 17-50 mm lens at 17 mm.

The resulting photos were brought into Adobe Photoshop CS5 from Adobe Lightroom 3 using panorama export. Photoshop then “stitched” each overlapping image. The final cropped and straighted image was enhanced using Topaz Adjust 4.

Although creating a “pano” from these large files size images requires a lot of computer memory – after several abortive trials, much frustration and perseverance, the actual panorama production could not be easier using Photoshop. Click on the image for an awesome larger view.

Bronx Zoo

Gorilla in Thought

I went to the Bronx Zoo last Wednesday with the Capital Region Photography Meetup Group. It was a very long day (we went to the Brooklyn Bridge to photograph it at night).

This image was made of a gorilla seemingly in thought. I used the Canon 300mm f4 L IS at f4 to create the shallow depth of field and produce a creamy bokeh (out of focus background).

More photos are in the photo galleries under Animals.

Murray at Day 2 as a Pupa

Murray the Pupa

The pupa has hardened and will stay this way until it turns black in about a week. This is an indictor that the butterfly is about to reveal itself.

You can now clearly see the gold and black “beads” around the upper half of the chrysalis. Some people even make jewelry that looks like this stage.

But I have a big problem: we will be away on the weekend and Murray may hatch by then. So, I may actually take him with me (plus the camera equipment) and hope that I can capture the next stages of his development.

Murray is Now a Pupa

Pupa

As a caterpillar, Murray had a green casing under his skin. He sheds the outer skin and reveals the green pupa, or chrysalis.

He is still stuck to the twig and will hang this way until adulthood. You can now see the cremaster which is the black spiny protrusion connecting the silk to the body of the pupa.

Unfortunately, I was away for the day and missed most of the transformation. We arrived at the last few minutes of Murray wriggling out of his skin. By the time I had the camera in position, the skin had dropped.

In the first photo, you can still see the soft ribbed body of the caterpillar. The pupa hardens within an hour or so after shedding.

This view of the pupa is the ventral side – you can see the wings (the butterfly is head down inside the casing). If you look carefully at the right lower edge of the pupa you can see gold dots – these are where the butterfly’s eyes are.

A later stage pupa

The next photo was taken about 1 1/2 hours after the first photo. Now the pupa is harder and shows the characteristic gold dots around part of the upper segment.

The “J”

In the J Position

I moved Murray to a better location so I could take his picture without interference. You can clearly see the white button attached to the twig.

He will be in this position for 14-18 hours before he sheds his skin again and beginsactual pupation.

Murray the “J”

Murray in the J Position

Well, glad I did not go to sleep!

At about 1:15 am, Murray’s feet let go and he formed the J shape.

The photo is still through the mesh but I will attempt to remove it in the morning and take better photos.

Murray Begins Button Formation

The Button

A very exciting day! Murray has begun the pupation process. This afternoon (8-12-10), Murray worked his way slowly up to the highest part of his habitat which is the twig that I placed spanning the jar opening. He had stopped eating earlier in the day after two days of pigging out.

At about 5 pm on Thursday, he became quite stationary clinging to the underside of the twig after an hour of what I can only describe as head bobbing. Sometime between then and about midnight he began the process of spinning out the button from which he will attach to the twig.

You can see that he is still holding on to the twig with his legs. This will soon change when the silk button is strong enough to allow the caterpillar to extend his body downward into the typical “J” shape prior to forming the pupa. Murray will hang in the J position for about one full day. Then his skin will shed for the last time.

The initial pupa will be soft for about one hour and then harden into the typical green color. I hope I can catch this process (unlikely but I will try). Roughly 10-14 days from the time the pupa forms, Murray will emerge as an adult (estimated between August 23 and August 28).

I feel like an expectant father!

This photo was taken at about 12:15 am on 8-13-10. It clearly shows the beginning stage of silk button formation from his posterior (hind) end. Please excuse the poor quality of the image – it was taken through the mesh that covers the jar. I was not willing to risk removing it so as not to disturb the button making process. If the caterpillar is disconnected at this stage it is very unlikely it will re-connect.
