Delray Camera Club “School”

Well, we are back in Florida and I am into the swing of things šŸ™‚

One of the most interesting events for me was the opportunity to give a workshop at the Delray Camera Club last Wednesday. They tried something a bit different: four concurrent sessions (repeated twice) on various photo subjects. Yours truly was asked to share tips for better flower and bird photography. It was a good idea and I got quite a lot of positive feedback.

Adult Osprey

The image here is one of those I used. It is, of course, an osprey in a typical pose. This guy was taken on Blue Cypress Lake (Yew Haw Junction – near Orlando). We went out on a pontoon boat to a wild area to capture these magnificent birds.

This image was used to illustrate a bird typical behavior and patience.Ā I waited until the bird turned his head toward me so that he was looking directly down the barrel of my Canon 300 L IS f4 with a 1.4 extender (1/2500, f5.6, ISO 500, 420mm).Ā Most important, I think – his eyes are in sharp focus.

Ospreys in late spring (this photo was taken last May 12) are nesting and raising their young. This mature adult is high above the water, watching for fish and protecting his territory. He has got long, sharp and narrow talons for catching and holding on to his prey. Take a look at some of my other osprey images (including those of immature birds in their nest) by clicking on the bird photo gallery link and scrolling down to the Middleton’s Fish Camp Osprey gallery.

Droste Effect

Flower-droste

The image was made of a backlight Rose of Sharon flower just after a brief shower. The photo was gently post processed in LightRoom 3.

The adjusted photo was edited in Photoshop CS5 using the new Adobe Pixel Bender plug-in and the Droste filter.

The Droste effect is a recursive picture within a picture – repeating the image element multiple times inside each other. The effect first used by an Italian artist of religious pictureĀ in the 12th century. The effect has been used countless times to the present. Click on the photo to get a much larger and better (an more color-corected) version.

Shadow Play

The shadows cast by the slate fence on the sand produced this outstanding black and white print.

The curve of the fence and its shadow guides the eye from the lower left to the upper left.

Taken at Jones Beach, 28 mm, f5.6 at 1/500 sec. Post-processing in Lightroom 3.

Walk in the Surf

Gull in the Surf

I saw this Ring-billed Gull walking in the surf of a warm late fall day in Jones Beach. The silhouette of the bird against the surf with glistening, specular highlights seems just the right image to make.

This gull (Larus delawarensis) was one of many on the shore – they are common to the coastline of the northeast.

Duck, Duck, Goose

Cackling Goose

This appears to be a Canada goose watching his reflection in the water at the Roslyn Pond. It resembles a Cackling goose whose bill is more triangular in shape.

They are pretty common in North America and tend to be quite long-lived. There are seven subspecies of Canada geese and this one is probably the Atlantic version.

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) feed on grasses, grains and berries. This male is quite large as geese go (the Giant Canada goose can weigh up to 20 pounds).

Mallard Ducks

Also in the same pond were lots of Mallard ducks. The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is probably the most well known duck and these four males are typical of the green head and the chestnut-brown body.

In the foreground is a female Mallard identified by its mottled brown color and orange-splotched bill.

Bokeh

Specular Bokeh

Bokeh is the “rendition of out of focus points of light”. The camera lens produces these out of focus points of light as more or less circular based on the shape of the aperture and lens element’s characteristics. Depending on the lens, bokeh may be pleasing or harsh.

This image was created using the Canon 28-135 lens at 85mm de-focused at the specular highlights of the Atlantic Ocean at Jones Beach.

If you click on the image, you will see the hexagonal lights which capture the aperture of the lens.

Jones Beach Shack

Ice Cream Shack

The hiatus in posting was mostly due to all the commotion surrounding the marriage of Deborah and Tal on Saturday evening!

On a break from the preparations, the “boys” went to Jones Beach on a beautiful and warm October day. This closed ice cream and snack shack looked great standing out there all by itself in the sand. The fencing added to the stark contrast of the scene.

I took many different shots and this image was processed using Topaz Adjust 4 to bring out some details. Jones Beach as it is commonly called is the Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, Long Island. Normally the beach is teaming with swimmers and sunbathers. Today, there were few people to enjoy the nice late fall weather. Jones Beach was the first public works project of Robert Moses.

Gourd Still-life

Gourd Collection

An autumn still-life is most colorful when using common garden-grown gourds. These were purchased in Walmart at a bargain price. The bale, on sale at Michaels, was used a the backdrop for the set-up.

A series of images were made with the Canon 28-135 and the Canon 100 macro. This photo is taken with the later on a tripod. After post-processing in LightRoom 3, I used Topaz Adjust 4 to enhance the details and character of the items.

The gourd is supposed to be earliest domesticated plant and were used vessels. The gourd is not native to the American continents but were “imported” by early people from Asia. They are in the family, Cucurbitaceae, and the genus, Lagenaria. This entire set-up will be transported to Florida to become our Autumn in Lake Worth diorama!

Leaf-peeping on Prospect Mountain

On Prospect Mountain

Yesterday, we took a leaf-peeping trip to Lake George and went up Prospect Mountain’s Veteran’s Memorial Highway.

The highway, built in 1969, is not even 6 miles long but it winds its way some 2,100 feet at the summit. From there you can see the Green Mountains, the Adirondack Mountains and a great view of Lake George Village.

This image was made at one of the lookouts and used Photomatix Pro to produce a fairly natural HDR photo. I will post a panorama of Lake George later today.

Waterfall at Fiver Rivers

Water Fall at Fiver Rivers

This is an image of a small waterfall located onĀ Beaver Tree Trail at the Five Rivers EnvironmentalĀ Center in Delmar, NY. It was captured during the waining hours of the day which produced a nice golden glow.

The image was made with my Canon 40D + the Tamron 17-50mm lens and a circular polarizer. Gentle LR3 pp.

This waterfall feedsĀ Beaver Pond which forms the focus of this trail. The property has a number of trails with a variety of woodlands and wetlands.
